For over five decades, Steve has been receiving services through Abilities Network. His journey, marked by both personal triumphs and meaningful contributions, exemplifies the profound ways in which community support can shape a life.
Steve’s story with Abilities Network began at the age of 14. Diagnosed with epilepsy, he sought a place where he could find understanding and support. At that time, Abilities Network was a humble self-help group, but it quickly expanded as more individuals discovered its benefits. For Steve, this group became a lifeline, offering not just support but a sense of belonging and purpose.
In those early years, Steve lived in housing provided by the Epilepsy Association, Abilities Networks former name. The routine was comforting: a live-in counselor guided the residents through daily activities like grocery shopping. This support system provided Steve with a stable foundation, helping him to manage his condition and build essential life skills.
As Steve grew older, he moved into his own apartment—a significant milestone in his journey toward independence. In this new phase, he took on responsibilities like managing his own finances and grocery shopping. Abilities Network continued to provide support, ensuring that Steve had the tools he needed to thrive on his own. Over time, Steve’s independence flourished, marked by a series of successful transitions.
One of Steve’s most memorable living arrangements involved an apartment where he lived downstairs while two young women lived upstairs. This setup fostered a sense of community and camaraderie. With counselors visiting regularly and his own counselor, Candy, living across the street, Steve enjoyed a supportive network that helped him navigate daily life with confidence.
Education was another significant chapter in Steve’s life. He attended Dundalk Community College with the goal of studying early childhood education. Although his challenges with epilepsy prevented him from completing the program, the experience demonstrated his willingness to push boundaries and pursue new opportunities.
One of the highlights of Steve’s journey with Abilities Network was his relationship with his counselor, Courtney. Over the seven years they worked together, Steve played a role in helping Courtney plan her wedding. His vivid imagination and enthusiasm for helping her choose vendors and visit stores added a personal touch to the event. This experience was more than just a personal triumph; it deepened Steve’s appreciation for the support he received and the friendships he formed.
Today, Steve continues to be an active and engaged member of the Abilities Network community. Although his transportation options are limited, he treasures the time he gets to spend out in the community. His love for embroidery, a cherished hobby, is a testament to his creative spirit. Without the support of Abilities Network, tasks like getting his embroidery machine serviced would be challenging.
Steve values the personal touch of the services he receives. In a world increasingly driven by impersonal interactions, the in-person support from Abilities Network remains a crucial part of his life. This human connection is something he deeply values and seeks to give back.
In celebration of Abilities Network’s 60th anniversary, Steve volunteered to join the anniversary committee. His creative ideas, thinking big and out of the box, have been instrumental in planning a memorable celebration. Steve’s contributions reflect his gratitude and desire to support the organization that has been his pillar for so many years.
Steve’s advice to others receiving services is both practical and heartfelt: “Give your counselors a chance. Don’t judge them right off the bat. They have to get used to you, and you to them. With time, things will get better. And if you have a problem, Abilities Network can usually find someone who can help.”
Steve’s journey is a powerful reminder of the positive impact of community support and personal resilience. As he continues to contribute to Abilities Network and give back in meaningful ways, his story serves as an inspiration to all who seek to find hope, independence, and connection through the support of others.
