Job Description

Classroom Specialist

To respond to calls for training and technical assistance and provide supportive and high quality access to assessment of the concerns and work cooperatively with the child care program to address the needs of programs serving children under age 6.  Assist child care centers, family child care homes and other child serving programs with the Maryland EXCELS program and provide needed connections with resources to support participation and advancement through the levels of EXCELS. Serve as a mentor to educators to support the creation of developmentally appropriate settings and strategies for the purpose of supporting all children.

What will I do at Abilities Network?

  • Assist and mentor educators with creating developmentally appropriate classrooms and implementing best practices for children under age 6 through direct instruction, modeling, training, and consultation.
  • Collaborate with educational personnel, childcare providers and parents as to generating developmentally appropriate activities for the home, school and the community.
  • Provide translation of outreach materials for bilingual child care providers and families.
  • Provide parents with the education, tools, knowledge and support to become more self sufficient in advocating for the full inclusion of their child with disabilities and/or challenging behaviors.
  • Help parents and child care providers to locate and coordinate community resources.
  • Facilitate team and other meetings to provide individual and group technical assistance to child care programs to improve quality of care for children under age 6.
  • Document activities utilizing observation forms, intake forms and maintaining all contact notes, as well as any grant mandated forms. Attend trainings and seminars as needed.
  • Responsible for ensuring program meets grant obligations for number of individuals served.
  • Develop and implement marketing plans to increase referrals for cases and technical assistance and to encourage participation in Maryland EXCELS and professional development courses.
  • Create letters and materials to assist with all marketing relevant to Project ACT and the services provided to children and providers.
  • Participate in meetings as deemed appropriate by the Project ACT, submit monthly reports to supervisor as required by the grants/funding sources and Project ACT.
  • Develop and complete intake forms for purposes of service needs and maintain all case files with current case notes and relevant information.
  • Function as a Project ACT Trainer by implementing community and grant-funded training and mentoring sessions.
  • Present all trainings and demonstration lessons to the child care community in a dynamic and professional manner.
  • Develop and implement trainings for early childhood professionals regarding the care of children under age 6.
  • As needed, develop individual trainings for providers when providing consultation services for a particular case.
  • Use training modules provided by the Maryland Family Network in Train-the-Trainer sessions as well as other licensed and approved trainings.
  • Attend Project ACT Advisory Board meetings, Project ACT Meetings and any other relevant community or committee meetings related to this position.
  • Support activities and events of Abilities Network when possible.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by supervisor and as necessary to fulfill the mission of Abilities Network.
  • Attend all internal or external meetings as designated to represent Project ACT.
  • Keep abreast of COMAR’s Child Care regulations and assist in developing effective strategies at the state and county level for addressing emerging issues in early childhood education through participation in meetings and workgroups.
What does Abilities Network need from me?

Must have a BA/BS Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Special Education, Psychology or a related field required.  Must have a minimum of 4 years experience working with children under age 6 and their families in an early childhood program. Knowledge of child care systems including Maryland EXCELS, accreditation, environmental rating scales and training requirements.  Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills required. Must have access to transportation as needed to fulfill the duties of position. In addition, availability to work some evenings and weekends and/or occasional overnight travel may be required.  Bilingual with fluency in Spanish preferred.

 

Physical Requirements

Must have the ability to lift up to 40 lbs, transport materials and move about training facilities necessary to train groups effectively.
